VeloDream competition

The competition was launched in September 2007 by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA). It challenged schoolchildren to design their own dream VeloPark to host the Cycling sports of a future Games.

More than 500 schools around the country signed up for the competition and the entries were narrowed down to 10 finalists who travelled to London for two days of events and activities.

The schools attended a design workshop run by the London VeloPark Design team and built a scale model of the 2012 Velodrome out of bamboo and string. They also listened to the ODA’s Head of Design Jerome Frost interview Shaneze Reade, BMX World Champion. Shaneze later met the schoolchildren, some of whom tried out her bicycle.

The next day the schools travelled to the Design Museum for the award ceremony. The two winning schools received their awards from Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell and Paralympian Ade Adipitan. All the finalists finished their stay in London with a tour of the Olympic Park site in Stratford to see for themselves the progress being made towards the London 2012 Games.
