Discovering PlacesDiscovering Places
Discovering Places is a UK-wide campaign giving participants the opportunity to discover, explore, be inspired by and benefit from the UK's hidden gems – historic and contemporary buildings, public spaces and natural places in and around the cities, towns and villages where they live and work.
Discovering Places launched at London 2012 Open Weekend, 23 – 25 July 2010, with over 100 events throughout the UK showcasing the local historic, natural and built environment. More than 10,000 people participated in the events over the weekend.

Discovering Places and the Bristol Natural History Consortium held the first ever ‘mini bio-blitz’ as part of Open Weekend 2010. A team of 10 scientists and naturalists, 30 volunteers and over 350 participants (including Wenlock) found 216 species in three hours.
Loyd Grossman OBE FSA, Chair of the Heritage Alliance said: “With so many of us now leading busy lives our familiar environments often get overlooked. What Discovering Places challenges us to do is to take a brief pause and spend some time uncovering the unusual in the everyday. You may be surprised to find a whole new world on your doorstep!”
Discovering Places will continue with a series of events and projects in the lead up to the Olympic and Paralympic Games. For further information about how you can be involved please contact c.bull@theheritagealliance.org.uk
