- Four Senses A landscape which surrounds us every day can often become “invisible” to us. What if the landscape would reveal itself by actually becoming invisible? What do the sense of smell, taste, touch and hearing tell us about the place we see every day, if we can no longer “see” it? Four Senses is a participatory artwork, where appreciation of the sensory world is encouraged though walking, sharing and mutual exploration. Four Senses is a “sightless” walk led by Emilia Telese to explore the sounds and smells of the New Forest. Participants are asked to wear blindfolds and are led through Sway and New Forest landmarks to experience the sounds and smells of local flora and fauna. Ornithologists, perfumers, food and plants experts will accompany the walk, telling participants about what they smell, hear, taste or touch and taking them through a journey in the realm of the senses. People taking part would be asked to employ techniques used by sight-impaired people to avoid getting lost. This walk will also involve local community groups including the New Forest Runners running and walking group and the Hampshire County Council Sensory Team, a National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) group, in order to involve partially sighted people to take part in the walk, and help sighted people to understand and explore how to use senses other than sight to experience our environment, and how sight-impaired people live their lives every day using their senses. Paralympic Games were initiatied in the South East of England, with the first ever Paralympic events held in 1948 at Stoke Mandeville. The project explores the Paralympic/Olympic themes of challenges against the odds, the discovering and rediscovering of places and the wonder of human achievement.
