Dominoes

Dominoes

26 July, 10.00pm: Sarah, Culture team

If ever a piece of participatory art lived up to that description, it was dominoes, an exciting finale to Open Weekend in the 5 host boroughs.

A fantastic piece of art, dominoes saw breeze blocks set in a meandering path through all 5 of the Olympic host boroughs before ending majestically at the royal naval college in Greenwich. Despite the fact that this linked the 5 boroughs in a really visual and exciting way, truthfully, the best bit was seeing the pure child like excitement of volunteers and spectators (myself included!) when the dominoes came tumbling in a surprisingly stately manner into the college grounds and the spectators literally ran like children, chasing the progress and cheering excitedly.

It was a really special moment to see an event connecting with people so directly.

If it wasn't enough to see the dominoes tumbling we were then treated to an hour long performance by talented actors building on the dominoes theme and captivating the crowd as the sun set on Open Weekend 2009. Open weekend 2010 has some big shoes to fill, but then, we like a  challenge at London 2012  and the UK culture sector is more than capable of delivering on it!

About this event:
On Sunday 26th July, thousands of concrete blocks will be used to create a giant line of dominoes along a 15-kilometre route. Beginning in Newham, the starting ceremony will see hundreds of blocks brought to life by a group of performers: changing, shifting and eventually setting in motion the slow toppling of blocks on their journey. On streets, through parks and even on water, occasionally disappearing and then resurfacing, sometimes pausing for sculptural performances, the domino line will wend its way southwards, crossing the Thames and concluding at dusk in the grounds of the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich. - Part of CREATE09
