Highlights
Vietnam's first Olympic medal came at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Tran Hieu NGAN took silver in the women's featherweight taekwondo.
In Beijing in 2008, weightlifter Hoang Ahn TUAN took silver in the men's bantamweight division. Vietnam's first appearance was at the Helsinki 1952 Olympic Games, when an eight-man team from the south of the country competed in athletics, boxing, cycling, fencing and swimming.
After the Vietnam war, a new National Olympic Committee was created and it sent a team of 30 to the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games. They participated in four sports.
The Vietnamese team in 2008 numbered 13 in eight sports.
