Uruguay

Uruguay

Highlights

Uruguay first appeared at the Paris 1924 Olympic Games where they won gold in football.

They retained their title at the Amsterdam 1928 Olympic Games. Their success inspired them to stage the first FIFA World Cup in Montevideo in 1930, but these were their only gold medals.

The last time the Olympic Games were held in London, in 1948, Uruguay sent a team of 61, their largest to date. Eduardo RISSO took silver in the men's single sculls and William JONES and Juan RODRIGUEZ grabbed bronze in the double sculls.

RODRIGUEZ partnered Miguel SEIJAS to bronze in the same event in 1952.

The basketball team took bronze in 1952 and 1956. Boxer Washington RODRIGUEZ collected bantamweight bronze at the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games, but that was their last medal of any colour until cyclist Milton WYNANTS took silver in the men's points race in 2000. WYNANTS competed in his fourth Olympic Games in Beijing 2008.
