Highlights

The first Olympic team to compete under the name Turkmenistan took part in the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games.

The seven members included two women who competed in judo. Small bore rifle shooter Igor PIREKEYEV was the first from Turkmenistan to compete at three successive Olympic Games (1996-2004).

His best finish was seventh in the 50m prone at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Umurbek BAZARBAYEV was seventh in the men's featherweight weightlifting at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.

Tolkunbek HUDAYBERGENOV also finished seventh in the men's featherweight weightlifting at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Athletes from Turkmenistan competed for the Soviet Union from 1952 to 1988.

Marat Atayevich NIYAZOV took a silver in three position small bore rifle shooting at the Rome 1960 Olympic Games.
