Highlights
Two Turkish athletes competed at the Stockholm 1912 Olympic Games.
They had also taken part in the 1906 Games in Athens, which are not considered part of the official Olympic cycle.
A first official team from Turkey was sent to the Paris 1924 Olympic Games. It numbered 22 men across five sports, but most Turkish success has come in wrestling and weightlifting.
Yasar ERKAN's gold in men's Greco-Roman featherweight at the Berlin 1936 Olympic Games was the first won by a Turkish Olympian.
Turkey won at least one wrestling medal at every Games from 1936 to 1968.
At the 1948 Olympic Games in London, six Turkish wrestlers won gold medals. Mithat BAYRAK won back-to-back gold medals in men's Greco-Roman welterweight at the 1956 and 1960 Games. He was one of seven gold medal winners at the Rome 1960 Olympic Games.
Naim SULEYMANOGLU won the first of three consecutive gold medals in men's featherweight weightlifting in 1988. Born in Bulgaria of Turkish descent, he had returned to his homeland. In all he competed in four Olympic Games from 1988 to 2000.
Hülya SENYURT's bronze medal in the half lightweight judo at the Barcelona Games in 1992 was the first medal won by a Turkish woman.
Nurcan TAYLAN was the first Turkish woman to win a gold medal when she set a world record in the women's flyweight weightlifting at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Turkey sent a team of 67 to Beijing in 12 sports.
Freestyle wrestler Ramazan SAHIN won their only gold medal in 2008, in the men's welterweight division.
