Tunisia were first represented by a team of 40 at the Rome 1960 Olympic Games.
Long distance runner Mohammad GAMMOUDI is Tunisia's most successful Olympic athlete.
He claimed their first medal, a silver over 10,000m at the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games and went on to win gold at 5,000m at the Mexico City 1968 Games.
In four Olympic Games, he collected a gold, two silver and a bronze. Seventeen-year-old Myriam MIZOUNI was the first woman to compete for Tunisia.
She swam in the 100m and 400m freestyle at the Montreal 1976 Olympic Games. Oussama MELLOULI became the first Tunisian to win a swimming gold medal when he won the 1500m freestyle at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
Tunisia sent a team of 26 in 10 sports to Beijing.
