Highlights

Timor-Leste first competed in 2000 with the special status of Individual Olympic Athletes under a special agreement brokered by the IOC.

The team of four included two marathon runners, a boxer and a weightlifer.

In 2004, Timor Leste sent two marathon runners to the Olympic Games in Athens. Aguida Fatima AMARAL, the first female competitor, had also taken part in 2000 as an individual Olympic athlete. AMARAL was one of four athletes who competed at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games as Independent Olympic Athletes.

She had endured extremely difficult conditions in her homeland during the lead-up to Sydney, and received an enormous ovation as she completed the race in three hours and 10 minutes. Mariana Dias XIMENES was Timor Leste's sole representative at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. She took part in the women's marathon.

The have yet to win a medal.
