Heptathlete Ghada SHOUAA was Syria's first Olympic champion.

She won gold at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games. Syria's first Olympian had been diver Zouheir AL-SHOURBAGI. His country's only competitor at the London 1948 Olympic Games, he finished 10th in the men's platform.

The 800m runner Malak EL-NASSER was the first woman to compete for Syria when she ran at the Munich 1972 Olympic Games.

They sent a team of 67 to the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games, their largest to date. Wrestler Joseph ATIYEH took silver in men's freestyle heavyweight at the Los Angeles 1984 Games.

It was Syria's first Olympic medal. Naser EL SHARMI took bronze in men's heavyweight boxing at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.

At Beijing 2008, Syria were represented by a team of seven in five sports.

In 1960, Syrians competed for the United Arab Republic alongside athletes from Egypt.
