Highlights
Carlos DE CANDAMO represented Peru in the men's foil and epee at the Paris 1900 Olympic Games and is acknowledged as their first Olympian. He joined the IOC in 1909.
The first official Peruvian team comprised 40 at the 1936 Games in Berlin. Peru's first Olympic success came at the 1948 Olympic Games in London.
Edwin VASQUEZ CAM won gold in the free pistol. In 1988 Peru's women took silver in the volleyball competition in Seoul. They were the first Peruvian women to claim an Olympic medal.
Other Peruvian medals to date have come in the shotgun events Francisco BOZA competed in four Olympic Games and grabbed silver in the trap at the 1984 Games.
In 1992 Juan Jorge GIHA YARUR also took silver in the men's skeet. He carried his country's flag at the Centennial Games in Atlanta in 1996.
At the Beijing Games in 2008, Peter LOPEZ lost in the semifinals of the men's featherweight taekwondo.
