Nicaragua were first represented at the Mexico City 1968 Olympic Games by an 11-man team in athletics, boxing and weightlifting.
Donald VELEZ competed in the men's long jump, javelin throw and decathlon in Mexico City, and in javelin at the Munich 1972 Games. He was the flagbearer for his country at both Games.
The first Nicaraguan woman to take part was Russel CARRERO, who ran the 100m and 200m at the Munich 1972 Olympic Games.
At the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games, Nicaragua's baseball team reached the semifinals. They were eventually beaten in the bronze medal play-off match by USA.
At the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, Nicaragua sent a team of six competitors in four sports.
Their flagbearer was the late Alexis ARGUELLO, the former world champion boxer.
They have yet to win a medal.
