Malawi were first represented at the Munich 1972 Olympic Games by a team of 17. The team included three women.
The 800m runner Emesia CHIZUNGA was the first to take part in the Games.
In Los Angeles in 1984, boxer Peter AYESU reached the quarterfinals in the flyweight division.
Distance runner John MWATHIWA competed in three consecutive Olympic Games from 1988-1996, running the marathon in 1988 and 1996. Malawi's team in Beijing in 2008 comprised two swimmers and two athletes.
