Kyrgyzstan first appeared as an independent nation at the Lillehammer 1994 Winter Olympic Games when Yevgenia ROPPEL took part in the women's biathlon.
Three members of the team at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games went on to represent the country at three successive Olympic Games.
Swimmer Yvegeny PETRASHOV and cyclist Yvgeny VAKKER, and women's marathoner Irina BOGACHEVA all competed in Atlanta, Sydney and Athens.
Kyrgyzstan's medals have come in judo and wrestling. The first Olympic medal came at Sydney 2000, when judoka Aidyn SMAGULOV took bronze in the men's extra lightweight.
Both their medals at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games came in men's Greco-Roman wrestling. Kanat BEGALIYEV took silver in the welterweight division and Ruslan TYUMBAYEV took bronze in the lightweight.
Swimmer Vitaly VASILYEV made his second Olympic appearance at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, 12 years after he had first become an Olympian.
From 1952–88, Kyrgyzstan's athletes competed for the Soviet Union. Most notably, rider Aleksandr BLINOV was a member of the gold medal-winning three-day event team at the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games.
