Highlights
Egypt's first gold medals came at the Amsterdam 1928 Olympic Games.
El Sayed NOSSEIR won gold in the light heavyweight class and Ibrahim MOUSTAFA won gold in the men's Greco-Roman light heavyweight.
All Egypt's gold medals have come in these two sports. At the Berlin 1936 Olympic Games, Mohammed Ahmed MOUSBA won gold in the lightweight and Khadr EL SAYED EL TOUNI won the middleweight gold.
In 1948, the last time the Olympic Games were held in London, Mahmood FAYED won gold in the featherweight and Ibrahim Hassanien SHAMS did likewise in the lightweight. Egypt also took home medals in wrestling.
In 1960, Egypt competed with Syria under the name United Arab Republic. Egypt did not win another gold medal until the Athens 2004 Games.
Karam Mohamed GABER IBRAHIM won the heavyweight gold in Greco-Roman wrestling. He carried the Egyptian flag at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Hesham MISBAH took bronze in the men's middleweight judo.
Egyptians have played a role in the Olympic movement for more than a century. Some books list fencer Mohammed HANASSANEIN PACHA as a competitor in 1912.
It seems more likely that he competed at the 1920 Games. The Olympic flag with five rings was first raised above the Chatsby Stadium Alexandria in 1914 during the Pan Egyptian Games.
