Costa Rica

Highlights

Fencer Bernado de la GUARDIA was Costa Rica's first Olympic competitor. He was their only representative at the Berlin 1936 Olympic Games and competed in the men's sabre.

Costa Rica did not send a team again until Tokyo 1964 but have attended every Games since then. They had to wait until the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games for their first medal. Swimmer Silvia POLL took the silver in the 200m freestyle.

At Atlanta 1996 her younger sister became Costa Rica's first Olympic champion, winning gold in the 200m freestyle.

At Sydney 2000, POLL claimed bronze in the 200m and 400m freestyle. One family was, therefore, responsible for every medal won by Costa Rica and all were won by women. At Beijing 2008, a team of eight competed in athletics, cycling, swimming and taekwondo.
