Cape Verde were first represented by a team of three in athletics at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games.

The 100m sprinter Ismenia do FREDERICO was the first woman from Cape Verde to take part at the Olympic Games. She competed in 1996 and 2000. Antonio Carlos PINA completed three successive Olympic marathons from 1996 to 2004. He is the only three-time Olympian from Cape Verde to date.

At the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, Nelson CRUZ finished 48th in the men's marathon.

Four of Cape Verde's six Olympians to date have competed in athletics. In 2004, Flavio FURTADO boxed in the men's light heavyweight division. Rhythmic gymnast Vania MONTEIRO competed in 2004 and 2008 and carried her country's flag on both occasions.
