Highlights

The Bahamas first competed at the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki but Bahamian sailor Sir Derward KNOWLES represented Great Britain in 1948 with his countryman Sloan FARRINGTON.

His exploits inspired the creation of the Bahamas Olympic Association. KNOWLES won bronze in for the Bahamas in 1956 and claimed his country's first gold medal in 1964 with Cecil COOKE.

In subsequent appearances his step-brother, Percy, crewed for him. In all, he competed in eight Olympic Games and carried the Bahamas flag at his final Olympic appearance aged 70 in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul.

More recently, Bahamas have had success in athletics. Frank RUTHERFORD took triple jump bronze in the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games. The women's 4x100m relay squad won silver in Atlanta 1996 and then took gold at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

Pauline DAVIS finished second in the women's 200m but was promoted to gold in when the medals were reassigned after the original winner was disqualified for doping offences.

Tonique WILLIAMS-DARLING won gold in the women's 400m at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.
