The Advertising and Trading Regulations bring in temporary restrictions to advertising and trading in open public places, within a few hundred metres around competition venues during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Although much 'business as usual' advertising, such as shop signs and in-store advertising will not be affected, to ensure the objectives of the regulations are met (or to prevent ambush marketing) other advertising in certain areas around the venues will only be permitted if authorised by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG).
Trading in open public places around the venues will need authorisation from the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA). Trading will be assessed to ensure the safety and security of the public visiting the venues. While the aim is to permit traders to operate business as usual, there will be a need to limit the number of traders in open spaces near venues to ensure the free flow of spectators.
Advertising applications are made to LOCOG, which considers them by reference to their criteria, as published in the Detailed Notice. Where LOCOG has an existing relationship with the advertiser (such as with its sponsors, non-commercial partners and venues) LOCOG will communicate directly with these parties in relation to granting the necessary authorisations and a full application may not be necessary. For all other advertisers, the advertiser must submit an application form to LOCOG.
Note that advertisers must have all other relevant consents and authorisations to undertake the advertising proposed. If you do not meet the LOCOG criteria for authorising advertising, we would ask you not to submit an application. An applicant who is refused an advertising authorisation may apply to the ODA for an independent review of the LOCOG decision
