Rachel is the Historic Royal Palaces first Artist in Residence at Hampton Court Palace.

We were huddled together around a table in Brighton to discuss and consider a vision for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Opening and Closing Ceremonies for London 2012.
Each one of us was very pleased that we were there, that our individual creative voices were contributing towards laying the foundations for an event that will be watched by 80,000 people in the Olympic stadium and four billion people around the globe through the digital networks. It is impossible to imagine four billion people!

People wouldn’t necessarily associate fitness with drawing skills, but a sportsperson’s training regime is not all so dissimilar actually to the one that I undertake each day as an artist. Luckily for me, I only have to spend the time running a pencil backwards and forwards across paper to keep fit.
But my skills were certainly put to great use last !

I have been involved in many exciting and interesting art projects, and my driving momentum is the exploration of fragility and hope. I was very excited to win the commission to paint six artworks (three of which are below) which would visually express the qualities of past and future Paralympic athletes for the Paralympic Games Handover and 60th Anniversary Celebrations Day at Stoke Mandeville Stadium last Wednesday, 17 Sept 2008.

I have lived with disability for most of my life, but rather than it being a hindrance, it has, I believe, given me a heightened sense of perhaps what it is to be human, to live every day, and continually reach out for new challenges and adventures.
