The second London 2012 accommodation seminar

Donna, Head of Accommodation, 1 May 2008

We held our second accommodation seminar on Thursday 24th April for hoteliers and accommodation suppliers. We have over 13,000 student rooms signed up across London universities at Games time so we decided to hold the seminar at Imperial College London - we have several hundred rooms reserved there for the media and technical officials in 2012.

So, with invites sent out we waited for the acceptances to roll in. 172 people later and we were in business.

The seminars are held to engage the hospitality industry and explain how London will operate in 2012. We had presentations from our workforce and security teams: they will play an important part in the smooth running of the accommodation function during the Games. Paul Deighton, our Chief Executive, talked about construction progress on the Olympic Park and out vision for 2012.

Accommodation in Beijing

Donna, Head of Accommodation, 7 January 2008

Before Christmas I was lucky enough to spend a week with the Accommodation Department of the Beijing Organising Committee. This was an incredibly useful trip and a great insight to the systems, processes and procedures we’ll be implementing over the next 4 ½ years. I was amazed at the calm and order in the office just 8 months before Games-time – what a tough act to follow!!!

Showing off London to NBC

Donna, Head of Accommodation, 18 September 2007

Last week saw NBC the American Broadcaster visit London for the first of its orientation meetings. NBC are one of the Olympic broadcasting rights holders who have the exclusive television rights through until 2012.  They are part of the GE Group which operates in over 100 Countries and employs some 320,000 people.

At the beginning of the week we met with the production team who are responsible for all logistical arrangements leading up to 2012.  They are looking for 1,000 rooms to accommodate camera crews, reporters, makeup artists, chefs, doctors and runners.

On Monday we welcomed the team to London 2012 HQ and spent the morning outlining our vision for 2012 and looking at venue locations.  That afternoon we toured the Olympic Park, specifically looking at the Main Press Centre to the North of Stratford which is where many of their employees will be based. From there we dropped down to Excel, the Dome and Greenwich. That evening we had a great meal over looking the Thames as the sun set!
