A very rewarding trip to school

Kathryn, 2012 Culture team, 21 July 2008

It's 8am in the morning, you've been in a car for 3 1/2 hours, you've got a broken projector and a hall that is about to be filled with 180 primary school kids (who the headteacher has told you will either be hyperactive or exhausted because it's the penultimate day of term) waiting for you to deliver an assembly. Your idea of fun or your worst nightmare?

Last Thursday, members of the LOCOG Education team and Communications team travelled to St. Peters Church of England Primary School in Caverswall, Staffordshire. Visits to schools are always very rewarding and entertaining but this one was particularly special as we were there to congratulate the school and especially one of its pupils, 10 year old Reece Berrisford, for winning a trip to the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games courtesy of Visa, as part of our Paralympic Handover education programme.

After meeting Reece for the first time, we set him his first task - meeting the press. Reece handled the photo shoot and questions from photo journalists like a true pro, telling the press all about why he is excited about the Paralympic Games and all about his new nickname - 'Beijing Boy'!

On 17 September, at approximately 2.45pm, the Paralympic Flag will be handed from the Mayor of Beijing to the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, signalling the moment that London becomes the next Host City and our four year build-up to the Games.

Paralympic Handover takes place in the middle of a Wednesday afternoon so London 2012 is asking schools and colleges across the UK to mark this special moment in some way.

We've produced a new online resource, now available at www.london2012.com/paralympichandover, to help schools and colleges develop their own plans and celebrations.

A good start

Kathryn, 2012 Culture team, 7 December 2007

Yesterday, the LOCOG Education team hosted a briefing for the Education sector. This was our first chance to share our plans for the London 2012 Education Programme and to explain what we’ve been doing for the last few months.

We were joined at the Vinyl Factory Gallery in Soho by an audience including Government, sponsors and members of the Olympic and Paralympic Families. The venue had been dressed by students from the London College of Fashion and the Chelsea College of Art and Design - they spent the few weeks leading up to the event coming up with ideas for how they could use photography, artwork, sound installations, stickers and even hopscotch to dress the venue and they did a fantastic job. The event was also broadcast live via webcast to a further 100 stakeholders from around the world.

This was our first chance to share our plans with all of our stakeholders. We have met with many of them over the last few months to share ideas, agree strategies and objectives and align our thinking but this was our first opportunity to present all of our plans in one place.

A sporting away day for the Culture team

Kathryn, 2012 Culture team, 12 March 2007

At the end of last week, the Culture, Ceremonies and Education Team set off on an adventure to Eton Dorney for their first Team Strategy Away Day.

Not only was this a useful day for introducing those members of the team that hadn’t yet met (!), but it also gave us the opportunity to update each other on recent progress and planning for the Culture, Ceremonies and Education Programmes, away from the frantic pace of Canary Wharf.

During the day, we rattled through our current plans for the Cultural Olympiad, our Ceremonies Programme – and in particular, the Beijing Handover Ceremonies (just 17 months away…and counting!) and the Torch Relays, plans for the Olympic Park and the Education Programme.

This is not to say all our planning is done – far from it – but it was an extremely helpful opportunity to sit down as a whole team and to set next steps and priorities for the coming months.
