Smallsteps4life launched yesterday by the Food Standards Agency - an initiative inspired by the 2012 Games to get people doing a little something different in their lives to make a whole lot of difference to their health and well-being.
Part of my role as a London 2012 Sustainability Ambassador is to get people thinking about sustainable living. For London 2012, that includes healthy living too and this new programme for school kids (part of the London 2012 Get Set education programme) is a brilliant way to get them thinking.
The aim is to get the kids to challenge themselves (come on, we all like a challenge!) to make a change to their lifestyle and stick to it for four weeks - it could be walking to school, having breakfast before they go, dancing for 10mins every day.
By sticking to it for a month not only will it give the pupil an immense feeling of satisfaction for achieving their target it will hopefully have embedded that positive change in their lifestyle and it’s on the next challenge.
Not all the kids who start on our initiative will end up as Olympic and Paralympic athletes. That’s not the aim, although with the launch being 200m from the Stadium there was plenty of open mouthed staring at it!
So this project is a brilliant way to get a little but long-lasting change. It’s being introduced through schools, but of course it’s something everyone could – and should – introduce to their lives.
What could you do differently – either yourself, or as a family? Walk one stop further to the bus stop? Eat an extra portion of seasonal fruit / veg a day? Take the stairs two flights instead of the lift?
Every little bit helps.
I’m challenging myself to eat breakfast every day (not something I always do at the moment!) and either my wife or I cycle to school as much as possible (with our little boy obviously)!
You can also enjoy an account of the day from one of the kids who was with me for the launch on the Newsround website.
great idea! i'm going to do my very best to stop eating after 10pm at night (my danger time at home!)...
