This week here at London 2012 we have been celebrating the completion of the steel structure of the Velodrome.
The steel outer ring looks a bit like a rollercoaster, don't you think?
During the Games the Velodrome will host Olympic and Paralympic Track Cycling events.

1 Comments on this postLast week I led Newham's Youth Council on a tour of the Olympic Park. It was really exciting to see the changes in Stratford and buildings springing up all over the park. Even from a distance outside you can see the Stadium and Aquatics Centre really taking shape. Up close they're even more impressive!

The LOCOG Athletes' Committee had its first meeting of the year last week and we spent a lot of time looking at practical ways in which the athletes can contribute in 2012 to making the London Games a sustainability success story.
We were lucky enough to have James Cracknell – double Olympic gold medallist and LOCOG Sustainability Ambassador – at the meeting and it was great to hear his thoughts on how athletes from all parts of the world can get involved.

Boxing changed my life, it has given me a focus.
When I heard that women's boxing was being readmitted to the Olympic programme, and that I could possibly be competing in 2012, it was the best news ever!! It was something I'd been waiting for since I took up boxing over five years ago.

I think the Games coming to London is amazing – it will really inspire young people and give them something to look forward to.
It'll be the biggest show on the earth and not just good for the athletes but for the residents and the country too. I can't wait for the Games – I'm from North West London so they will be in my home town and I will be in shape, raring to go and ready to be there supporting!

Sir Robin Wales, Mayor of Newham, 20 January 2010
The London 2012 Games help inspire people to set new ambitious targets and really go for them. So many people have already taken up the challenge to gain new skills, jobs and knowledge about other nations.
I'm a keen footballer, but the London 2012 Games have inspired me to also try out long-distance running. I'm now training for the Newham 10k London run on Sunday 7 March in Stratford, east London, which is being organised for us by the organisers of the Great North Run - the largest half marathon in the world.

A new Pumping station has been structurally completed on the Olympic Park. Together with a new sewer network, it will collect and remove waste water from the main venues and buildings during the London 2012 Games, and venues and residential buildings after the Games.
Embossed images on the concrete exterior of the Olympic Park Pumping Station depict the history of the London sewer network and its Victorian origins.

A whirlwind day – we announce that I am Director of the Cultural Olympiad – literally in a whirlwind of snow, with a photo shoot of me in the pouring snow – and I get deluged by wonderful messages and texts of welcome and congratulations.
The best job in the UK, and whilst people often talk about 'a once in a lifetime opportunity', it seems unlikely that I will ever get the chance again to work on such an enormous and exciting project.

I am so proud that LOCOG has worked with Sheffield Hallam University to insert an Olympic-related module into each of three well-respected undergraduate courses from January 2010.
This means that students will get the opportunity to learn about the Olympics and, more importantly, understand what goes into organising the facilities and services for 5,600 journalists and photographers at the Games.

There are hundreds of thousands of people across the UK who are inspired by London 2012 and are helping to make sure the Games will be a fantastic success. And BT wants to make sure that these people are recognised.

It’s not just the weather that makes health and safety professionals go cold, it is thinking about what might happen if someone got hurt.
