Getting my hands on a piece of 1948 Games history

My father was given some original London 1948 Swimming and Athletics tickets by a friend recently:

London 1948 Swimming tickets

She was given them in 1948 by her aunt Joyce Cooper, an Olympic medallist in 1928 and 1932. Sadly the friend was unable to attend the events in 1948 due to ill health so kept the tickets tucked safely away. She rediscovered them recently during a room clearance and thought that London 2012 might like to have a look at them.

The tickets were still in their original envelope with a 1948 Royal Mail stamp and Olympic Games postmark:

I was so excited when my father told me about these and it was such a thrill to see and hold some 1948 original event tickets. They are a real treasure.

I hope people will feel just as excited in another 60 years time when they get their hands on London 2012 tickets and a little piece of Games history.

These are brilliant! How amazing for you to come across a little bit of Games history like that. Quite like the old 'pictograms' too!

I was so excited when I came across an old transport map from the 1948 Games showing Finchley open air swimming pool - my old local - as one of the venues.

Wow. I just decided to look into going to the games in 2012 because my dad competed in the 1948 games in London. I thought it would be so great to see the Olympics in the same place that he competed so many years ago. He was a diver. I wonder if those tickets were to his event. I hope to have a set of tickets from 2012 that I can save for many years too. Thank you for posting those.

What a delight to read this blog. I have just spent the weekend with my elderly uncle who has for his whole life lived in London and is an avid fan of the Olympic games.

He attended every day of the Olympic games in 1948 with his father and is incredibly proud of his London roots.

He would just love to be able to go to the games in 2012 and I think it would make a wonderful tale. There cannot be too many Londoners who attended in 1948 and are still alive to enjoy the games coming back to London in 2012.

I hope I shall be lucky enough to get tickets for him when they go on sale in 2012.
