Meeting the new London 2012 education logo designer

This morning I was at Nightingale Primary School in Woolwich as we announced the winner of our education logo competition and the first schools in our official Get Set network.

Reiss Evans with Jonathan Edwards, Tessa Jowell and pupils from Nightingale Primary School display the new London 2012 education logo

Reiss Evans, 18, beat off UK-wide competition with his coloured pencils design to 'infill' the London 2012 Olympic logo. It's now going to be used by schools and colleges across the UK who join the official Get Set network - part of the London 2012 education programme.

I managed to catch up with Reiss in between all the excitement (Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell and Jonathan Edwards were also there for the announcement) to ask him about the competition and how it felt to win...

Why did you enter the competition?
Normally London 2012 is about sport, but this competition showed how it’s about more than that. Education and Art are also part of it too. It gave me an option/chance to get involved, even though I’m not really into sport.

Did you take a long time to decide what design to do?
It took me about a day. I started with a mind map and made some thumbnail images. I chose the one I thought worked best and then worked up the design. I submitted my design on the day the competition closed. It took about 2 weeks to work up the design with Future Brand [London 2012's creative agency]. The original was a photo.

What's the idea behind your design – why pencils?
The idea came from thinking about how everyone uses pencils, right form the earliest age through to adulthood and your whole life. They represent school and education.

How does it feel to have won, to know you're going to see your work featured everywhere?
Brilliant! I really didn't think I would win – I've never won anything before. It's great to know that everyone will get to see my work and what I can do and that it'll be displayed in my college and in other schools and colleges.

What was it like working at FutureBrand over the summer?
Future Brand were really great – the people were really nice and friendly. I learned load of new graphics skills. I learned how to do vectors, which is something which is designed on a computer – which is what we used for the final logo design. I feel like I'm one step ahead of my peers now as I've learned new skills and have experience of a real work environment. It makes me want to be a designer even more than before.

What inspires you about London 2012?
London 2012 is really important and this has made me realise what a massive event it is. There's so much going on. This competition is just one part of it and yet there's all this activity going on about this logo infill and my design – it shows what a big event it really is.

By the time London 2012 comes around I hope I'll be at uni, or maybe working as a designer, either in a full time job or freelancer.

My friends are all really happy for me and my mum's really excited too!
