A life changing moment for the London 2012 Education Logo design competition winner?

For me, what's important about our Get Set education programme isn't how many people register and how many use our resources – it's about how many young people are excited about London 2012, want to learn about the Games, play their part in them. It's how many people ultimately look back in 2013 and are proud that the Games were a part of their life and their community.

That's why I was so excited when we launched the London 2012 education logo competition – it was a real opportunity for young people to play their part, to be able to stand up and say 'that was me, I did that' – to make their own small piece of history.

For those of you who don't follow the intimate details of our education programme (shame on you) – the competition invited 16-19 year old designers to come up with the London 2012 education logo. Before you go getting your knickers in a twist – we aren’t creating a brand new logo, it's an infill, something which sits inside the core shape of the London 2012 logo. The brief for young designers was to come up with something that says 'young people', 'Get Set', 'London 2012' etc.

The winning design will become the official London 2012 Education Logo and be awarded to schools and colleges across the UK. Personally, I think it is quite a big deal!

Education logo competition finalists

I'm no graphic designer, but I think it's safe to say that we had some fantastic entries – and shortlisting was nothing short of a nightmare. But we did it and six extremely enthusiastic and talented young people came to London for the final a couple of weeks ago. They presented their designs to a panel of judges – I could write a whole blog on how fantastic the finalists were, how talented, eloquent and enthusiastic, but I'll spare you – suffice to say, the judges picked a winner.

This afternoon I’m going to tell that winner that they have won – and suddenly I wondered if this is one of those moments when a single phone call can have a massive impact? Will this be the start of this young designers career? (Or indeed, will this budding young designer be put off design for life?!) I’m not pretending that I’m giving someone a cure for a terminal illness or doing anything anywhere near as noble – I just did the admin for the competition and I'm today just the messenger, the person who gets to make the call – he/she is the one with the talent, the one who got themselves this far – but I'm honoured to be a part of the process just the same.

Perhaps there are little things like that that happen every day and we don't even know it?
