On Thursday last week I spent the most wonderful day in Merseyside with the North West Team 2012. The day was entirely focused on sport. I was able to help at the Merseyside Primary School Games where the different districts of Merseyside competed amongst each other in friendly competition at the amazing facilities at Wavertree Sports Park.

The Marriage of Sport and Art…

…a great Olympic phrase which you may have heard before. If not, then Saturday was a terrific example on the big screens at Glastonbury!

Chocolate makes you fat; London 2012 is all about encouraging healthy living and getting everyone inspired to do more sport.

So as the first London 2012-branded Cadbury Dairy Milk bars soon appear on the shelves, people will no doubt start asking questions: How can we responsibly partner with a chocolate company? Surely we’re sending out the wrong message? Aren't we just encouraging obesity at a time when it's already such an issue?

The London 2012 Games are a catalyst for change, and one such example is the Olympic Delivery Authority’s (ODA's) participation in the National Mentoring Consortium (NMC).

This scheme enables corporate organisations to provide mentoring to undergraduates from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds, and for disabled and dyslexic undergraduates from a number of universities around the country.

This year was ODA’s first as part of the consortium and to our surprise and delight, we were awarded the 'Best New Employer' for both ethnic minority undergraduates and disabled or dyslexic undergraduates.

Q. What's the best way to involve people with the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games?
A. A sticker, a leaflet, information in a travelcard wallet – and an Olympic Torch.

Last Saturday, 20 June, I shared a stall with colleagues from London 2012 at the ProActive Islington Sports and Cycling Festival, in north London. Surrounding the Arsenal stadium, the event offered archery, athletics, boxing, cycling, fencing, football, rowing, trampolining, volleyball, wheelchair basketball, plus dance, health checks and other activities.

Over 10,000 people attended, and many of them stopped by at our stall. Children wanted the sticker with...

Yesterday I visited the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy to meet the members of the Dorset Strategic Partnership. The mission of the Partnership is to improve quality of life and well-being for people in Dorset in a sustainable way. It is made up of representatives from regional and local Government and Natural England who are the Government's advisors for protecting our natural heritage.

I love this time of year.

The sun is out, Greenwich Park looks terrific and more and more local people and visitors from around the world are here in Greenwich, enjoying all the park has to offer.

I imagine London will be a lot like this in 2012; a multi-national audience and infectious festival atmosphere wherever you go.

Greenwich Park has been used for plenty of activities over the years but this will be the first time it'll be used for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Rowing has often been seen as an elitist sport. But at Bewdley Rowing Club we know that's not the case. We see people come in, have a go and just few months later compete in their first regatta.

The Victorians would pour over a well thumbed edition of Baedeker before embarking on a Grand Tour. By comparison the Network Rail online timetable lacks a certain romance, but I'm checking on connection times at Crewe with just as much anticipation.

For last year's Open Weekend I tested the UK's public transport network to (and sometimes beyond) its limit. I clocked up almost one thousand miles to take in as many of the 600 events as I could – to see new street festivals, innovative outdoor art, multi-media shows and young film-makers meeting great movie talents.

As Chair of the Communities and Local Government Select Committee I, and two other members of the Committee, visited the Olympic Park, in Stratford, east London.

The Committee is particularly interested in the legacy of the Games; creating jobs and homes in some of the poorest parts of London.

We were shown around the Park by the Chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), John Armitt, and ODA Head of Design, Jerome Frost.

This was our third visit to the Park since 2007 and it was very exciting to see the transformation of a scruffy area of...

Wimbledon gets underway today and I'm excited for what it holds for us this year. On the back of a great win at Queen's will Andy Murray become the first Brit since Fred Perry to win on home soil? It is a statistic I know only too well. Or will Roger Federer win his record-breaking 15th Grand Slam title?

Take 160 cyclists, a four day cycle race around a scenic part of Switzerland – the Tour de Romandie – surely a healthy, clean mountain air and low carbon sport if ever there was, and what do you get? Well 138 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions to be precise – or the equivalent weight of 138 elephants!

Some of the greatest assets for London 2012 are the seamless relationships between stakeholders and delivery partners and the great cross-party support in Parliament for hosting the Games.

The debate I held in the House of Lords yesterday was a great example. Peers from all sides of the House spoke on issues from sport to culture, venue progress to regeneration. The House of Lords has an almost unique depth of knowledge and experience in every aspect of public life – and the Games is no exception.

Ascot's underway...the Equestrian season is now in full swing. So it's been a busy few months for me, with plenty of opportunity to talk to riders face-to-face at events like the Badminton Horse Trials; and events like a Community Consultation at the Pavilion Tea Rooms in Greenwich Park. This was so we could speak to local residents.

Each event gives me a unique opportunity to talk to people get their feedback.

‘And the London 2012 Paralympic Recurve Archery Gold medal goes to Sandra Spinks of Great Britain.’

Ahhhhhh! I can dream, but it would be so fantastic to hear those words one day! Like every amateur sportsperson, I too dream of one day being selected to represent Great Britain at the world’s best disabled sporting arena… the Paralympic Games. This dream would be even more special to me if I can make it to 2012, as I was born and raised in Newham, one of the London boroughs hosting the Games, and lived there for over 20 of my 36 years.

'Stimulation of the mind or emotions to a high level of feeling' is how one dictionary puts it.

Another declares 'The condition of being so stimulated'.  Admit it – you're starting to wonder where this is going...

'An agency, such as a person or work of art, that moves the intellect or emotions or prompts action or invention.' Now, that's getting closer.
