Did you know that this week National Volunteering Week celebrated its 25th birthday?
As part of the celebrations I travelled to Northern Ireland and met a group of Mencap volunteers who were enthusiastic, bright and welcoming – just the kind of attributes we will want from our volunteers in 2012; attributes essential to the success of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
I met the Millenium Volunteers who work with Mencap helping out at their recreational and social clubs. They were at the Belfast Activity Centre attending a fun day to thank them for their time and commitment to volunteering - not to mention the great levels of skill they commit to helping others. Some of the people I met have given over 200 hours to volunteering in Northern Ireland – a nationally recognised Award for Excellence and rightly so!
