A new walking and cycling route for London in 2012

It was great to see the Jubilee Walkway Trust recently launch the new Jubilee Greenway walking and cycling route at the Olympic Park.

The Jubilee Greenway is a 60km cycle and walking route. It will link all central London 2012 venues to east London and the Olympic Park and is being created to mark Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, in 2012.

It has also been awarded the London 2012 'Inspire mark', because it will help to achieve one of the key long-term aims of the Games: to get people more active. By creating a clean, safe and fun walking and cycling experience for people during the Games we will hopefully see more people choosing this travel option long afterwards.

HRH The Duke of Gloucester, patron of the Trust, launched the plans last week and was joined throughout the day by a host of other guests. Here he is taking a ride along The Greenway:

We started the day with a tour of the historic Abbey Mills Pumping Station situated on the Jubilee Greenway route in Newham. We then got on our bikes and cycled along the part of the route that is being improved for the 2012 Games.

It was then time for an excellent tour of the Olympic Park, where we saw just how quickly the venues are starting to take shape.

Next stop was Victoria Park and St Marks Gate, the site of a potential Legacy Arch for 2012. We then took the last leg of the Jubilee Greenway route with a canal boat trip along on the Regent's Canal, finishing at City Road Lock in Angel Islington.

I’m glad to say the day was a huge success, with everyone very excited about the potential of the Jubilee Greenway route to help encourage more people to walk and cycle. If you've seen/walked/cycled the route yourself you'll know what they were excited about.
