April 2009

April 2009

On the 24th-26th July 2009 we'll be striving to get more people involved with London 2012. We're asking cultural, sporting, environmental and learning organisations from all over the UK to open their doors to the public, through London 2012 Open Weekend, to give folks an opportunity to get a taste of what these organisations are all about. Whether that means offering a 'backstage' tour of inner workings the public never gets to see, or offering taster sessions for various sports totally depends on the organisation.

Last Tuesday our online registration form went live and organisations started signing up straight...

It was a pleasure to be Seb Coe's guest on Tuesday, and to meet his 2012 team.  The extraordinary change that is transforming the Docklands area is the most important, far-sighted development in London for the last 100 years.  Twice before, London  has hosted the Games – in 1908 and 1948 – but, White City apart, existing facilities were used.  There was nothing to compare with what is happening here.

For Billy Bragg it's a dirty old penny – a real old money penny with Queen Victoria's head just about visible through the encrusted copper – dating back from 1899. At London's Wellcome Collection, he explained that his grandfather gave it to him and regularly told him the story that it was minted in the year of the relief of Mafeking.

The All-Party Parliamentary London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Group held its latest major annual conference in Parliament today, supported by the Industry & Parliament Trust and in collaboration with London 2012.
The focus was firmly on business opportunities, involvement and support, with speakers drawn from the Olympic Delivery Authority  (ODA), the London Development Agency (LDA) and the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG). Turnout was high - over 100 companies, trade associations, business groups, accountants, lawyers and local authorities quickly registered to attend alongside a couple of MPs.

What an opportunity... being invited by Dame Kelly Holmes to have a private tour of the Olympic Park! I couldn’t believe my luck!!

The first thing that strikes you about the Park is the size of it, the amount of traffic on site and how much they’ve done so far. For all the negativity that we see in the media, there IS so much going on! Each contractor (and there are about 20 on site) has their own area which they are working on, even our guide who had last been on site a month ago kept shouting 'ooh.. look...

I don’t know how you find it, but I think it’s easier to get up with the lighter mornings, which is fortunate as it was the 6.15 AM for me and a train to Durham for the North East 2012 meeting. As with other groups across the Nations and Regions, they meet to work out how they can best maximise the opportunities presented by the Olympic and Paralympic Games in London in 2012. We try to attend as many meetings as we can so we get a good feel for what's going on in the region on the London 2012...

As I write, the Chancellor is about to open his famous red box and reveal his 2009 budget...as you read this you may already be trying to work out the pros and cons of what he’s said and the impact on your own household budget.

But just before we get obsessed with the Chancellor’s figures, I feel the need to share some good news figures and milestones from our own red letter day for the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

Firstly we’ve announced, today, that one of our leading commercial partners, BP, are becoming sponsors of the 'Open Weekend' starting...

Recently I went to the Olympic Park site in London to discover what progress had been made and how companies from Northern Ireland can make an impact on the landscape of the Park through the business opportunities generated by the Games.

One of the first things that hits you when you visit the site is the sheer scale of the progress that has been made to date. From the visual impact of the Olympic Stadium to the roof going up on the Aquatics Centre you realise what a massive logistical challenge is being delivered on such...

Last week Homerton Baptist Church and other churches in the five Host Boroughs (Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest and Greenwich) met at Homerton to hear from representatives of the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), Hackney's 2012 team and the London Development Agency (LDA). It was a mixed group ranging from five months to over 70 years. All had come to hear about developments on the Olympic Park so far and the plans for the future.

The first race to the Olympic Park  took place yesterday morning - a 10k run organised by Newham Council, inspired by our very own Olympic gold medallist Tessa Sanderson. The race was for everyone – elite runners, wheelchair racers, fun runners and everyone in-between.

Through my course at the University of Brighton in Eastbourne, I have just started work as an intern in the LOCOG  Communications team – a great opportunity to learn and understand more about the whole London 2012 project.  Thanks to colleagues in the ODA  I was really happy to get myself on a tour of the Olympic Park  so that I could see, close-up, just what the Games will be like in 3 years' time.

An early start this morning for the fast train to Cambridge and the meeting of the London 2012 consortia in the east of England.  All the regions  in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland  and Wales, have a group which works on getting the most of the London Olympic and Paralympic Games in their area.  I try to go to as many as I can to get a good feel for what is happening locally and regionally as it’s only too easy to see things just from a London perspective – even for a northerner like me!...

Come and join the Newham Classic 10k Run on Sunday 19 April 2009 in Stratford and help write a new chapter in the sporting history of Newham.

I’m really excited that the 1,000 people who enter the Newham Classic 10 kilometre run will be able to take in great views of the Olympic Stadium.

I have been down at the Olympic Park site this week and it looks amazing. The progress made over the last 12 months is an incredible achievement that, as an ex-athlete, makes me really proud. I'm really keen that the community get...
