North East turns out for London 2012 in Parliament

Yesterday LOCOG hosted its latest regional briefing for MPs and Peers from the North East of England.

NE Parliamentarians drop in

Compared to other regions, the North East is actually quite small in the number of MPs, so I was nervous we would not get a great turnout – but my nervousness was misplaced. The turnout was hugely impressive, with MPs from across the region (from Durham, Hexham, Stockton, Tyne Bridge, Bishop Auckland, Blaydon and elsewhere) all crowding into a room to find out more about the impact of the Games on their constituencies and the broader region.

We made sure they all found out about potential Pre-Games Training Camps, business opportunities, and cultural and education plans – together with the other initiatives being pioneered by the North East London 2012 team- represented on the night by Peter Rowley, Chair of the Regional Sports Board and Tanya Gray from One North East. Almost on cue, Minister for the Olympics Rt Hon Tessa Jowell MP arrived to add a bit of Ministerial pizzazz to the event.

Most MPs stayed for a long time discussing all sorts of issues with Olympian Jonathan Edwards, the 2012 team and our host for the night, Dari Taylor MP. After a glass of wine or (sustainable) water, we all headed off into the night thinking about what the Games will mean to people from across the North East.
