Staying safe near construction sites

On Friday I attended the last in the series of health and safety workshops that have been held at secondary schools near the Olympic Park over the last few weeks. The session I attended was in the London Borough of Newham and was attended by about 30 pupils from Year 7.

Ria and Andy performed a theatre workshop which demonstrated the importance of staying safe when living and playing near to construction sites. This was followed by an exercise where the children reflected on the issues raised in the workshop and thought of ways to keep themselves safe, especially when playing out over weekends and holidays.

At the end of the session we gave them an update on some of the facilities that would be left behind in the area after the Games in 2012. All the keen swimmers in the group seemed particularly excited to hear that the Aquatics Centre will provide them with two brand new 50-metre swimming pools and a diving pool after the Games, which will have added kudos once used by all the Olympic and Paralympic athletes in 2012.

I think the 'health and safety workshops' are a great idea. Health and Saftey are paramount and what a great way to demonstrate its importance. Theatre workshops make education fun and memorable.

Building sites are very dangerous and it is good to see children being involved in the recognition process rather than simply being lectured. Althoughy this is an Olympic site the knowledge gained will apply more widely.
