A spectacular day for our Beijing heroes

It was pleasure rather than business today which saw me out and about in London today for the athletes' parade. It was always going to be a special day – but when I saw the blue sky with that precious sun shining in it, I knew it was going to be spectacular.

Watching the parade and seeing the Olympic and Paralympic athletes, brought back some wonderful memories from four years ago when I was actually on one of those floats - celebrating my silver medal from Athens. So I know exactly how those guys felt today – I remember how great it was to be so close to the cheering crowds, the smiling faces and feeling quite emotional about it all. It's a great feeling.
When I arrived in Trafalgar Square, it was just filling up and the atmosphere was full of anticipation. So many people waiting for the athletes to arrive – maybe slightly chilly from waiting around in the autumn sunshine, but happy watching on the giant screens as the parade travelled from Guildhall to the Square. It's just so great to know that the British people feel so proud of their athletes and want to take time out from their work or even travel in from outside the city to celebrate with them.

You can't help thinking about what this will be like in four years – it's just going to be fantastic, I seriously can't wait.

After this jam packed day of emotion and fun, all the athletes will carry on with their celebrations this evening as they have been invited to Buckingham Palace to be recognised for their achievements - that will be something special and although I won't be there this time, I will certainly be aiming to meet up with many of them afterwards to catch up! A perfect end to a superb day.

The adults in our family watched the parade and cheered all the Olympians and Paralympians who had given us so much excitement in the summer holidays. The only shame was that the school children could not be there. What an inspiration it would have been. They did watch television at school for part of the parade but this is really not a substitute for being at the parade. Better planning next time please.Geraldine
