An Inspired Home Run

Lisa, 13 Oct 2008

On Sunday 12 October the 'Home Run' temporary landmark was revealed. The structure represented and celebrated the different communities and histories in Peterborough's Dogsthorpe and New England areas. The structure was developed with local communities to animate the route of the Great Eastern Run. It is estimated it was seen by 12,000 people from local communities, the runners and spectators of the Run.

The structure represented the two most frequent shapes that emerged from the public workshops, that of the Gothic arches of Peterborough Cathedral and the domes from Peterborough's Mosques.

The artist CJ Mahony worked with the local school and residents groups to produce this unique structure that animated and utilised public space and brought communities to celebrate culture and sport in one event.

The project was awarded the Inspire Mark by London 2012, recognising how the project brought culture and sport together and celebrated the values of the Cultural Olympiad.
