There are so many different parts to the Olympic Park, which I am really enjoying learning about, some more surprisingly than others. Last week I went to meet Tony from the team who are building the sewage network for the Olympic Park, one of the great unseen projects. We met to talk about getting children from the local community out to learn about the work. There is also the possibility of the children naming one of the huge boring machines that are creating the tunnels along which sewage will run. The boring machine, currently known as Becky, is being deployed for its first underground venture this week.

I was really interested to see the work they were doing, wandering up to the offices from the Olympic Park’s South Plaza. I was introduced to Spencer, the Project Manager for the work, and Shane, who gave me a useful and informative site induction. He then took Tony and I out to show us the site of the pump house, and the main vertical pipe above which it will sit. The pipe is absolutely massive! I guess this is the kind of thing you really wouldn’t want to run out of space with.
The new Olympic Park sewage network will link in to the Victorian Northern Outfall Sewer, via the new pump house, again serving as a reminder that this amazing Olympic Park programme is not only about building for the future, it’s also making the best of the past.
