Meeting the adidas athletes

Sutveer, Culture team, 18 Jun 2008

Today, I got the opportunity to interview some adidas athletes many of whom, are hopefuls for Beijing. Athletes included BMX rider Shanaze Reade, diver Tom Daley (who I met for the second time this week), cyclist Victoria Pendleton, Modern Pentathlete Heather Fell and swimmer Xavier Mohammed.

Many of them were involved in the launch of the new adidas Team GB kit, and came into LOCOG to hear more about what adidas has got planned for the next few months as a sponsor of the London 2012 Games. They also had the chance to find out more about what LOCOG are planning, particularly the education programme. After posing for many shots in front of the cameras I was able to grab them for a quick chat.
A  question which received some interesting answers was if they had any superstitions or routines that they went through before competing. Tom told me about his lucky orange monkey (with sticky hands) who always has to be with him, Victoria and Heather agreed painting their nails and doing their hair was something they have to do, while Shanaze said she always carries a picture of her family and Xavier buys an album and will only listen to that one album throughout the competition.

When asked about their hopes for Beijing, Shanaze said she hoped for gold medal, Heather said she isn’t expecting to win a gold medal but hopes that one of the girls on the Modern Pentathlon team does well. Tom said he isn't expecting a gold medal either but is looking forward to the experience so he can get ready for 2012.
