Change on the Olympic Park

Kola, Equality and Inclusion Advisor, 20 Mar 2008

To all you great and wonderful people out there who read my first blog on this site, here’s the update on that Fencing competition I went to in Edinburgh.

The journey by train was quiet but the rain at the other end was almost freezing. I’m convinced it must have frozen most of my brain cells, hence my inability to do anything tangible on the Saturday. To be honest, I fenced worse than a beginner and only managed to win two out of 12 fights.

I went back to my room to watch the rugby, only to see England lose quite badly to the Scottish. I guess it wasn’t a weekend for the English.

But at least it wasn’t the same back on site. I came back to work on the Monday and quite a few changes had happened. The haul road through the main Stadium had moved a few feet to the left, making it possible for more crushed concrete to be put down in preparation for the big build. And I got an aerial shot of the whole of the Olympic Park – even though it’s probably out of date by now.

As I worked through Equality and Inclusion, I realised that there is diversity in competition as well – sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. So, I opted not to give up fencing on the back of a bad day and proceeded to attend the Open on Saturday 15 March. In terms of how I performed, it was so much better. A focused mind and some real motivation brought me home in 21st position – out of 80 competitors. Now all I have to do is stay consistent and do better in the Isle of Wight and Sheffield events in May. And of course, keep it all tidy on the Olympic Park.
