Let’s get down to business

Nathan, Culture team, 23 Sep 2007

After an unforgettable two week induction with 9 of my fellow school leavers, I have been chosen to work in the Culture department specifically in Education. I will be spending three months in the department as part of my first rotation.

Me at the Olympic Park site:

On the last day (Friday 14th) of my induction I was given an emergency briefing by my new department buddy Erin. She made me aware that my first week would be very action packed, full of meetings, presentations and paperwork. It was at that moment I realised the honeymoon period of the school leavers programme was over, the rigorous interview process, the induction presentations all counted for nothing, as the real work was about to begin. That Friday evening I went home eager to start my first day in my new department, knowing I would have to ‘hit the road running’.

When I arrived on Monday, I was greeted by Kathryn, the education manager of my department. We discussed the different activities I would be doing during the week and what my roles I will have. The main priority being that 20 teachers from around the UK, were scheduled to visit the LOCOG building on Wednesday. Some of the teachers were travelling from as far as Scotland and Northern Ireland. We had to arrange travel and overnight accommodation for the majority of attendees. Also we to prepare a presentation of such quality that they’d leave the event pumped full of enthusiasm about the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Our main goal was to illustrate how education and the core values of the Olympic and Paralympic Games can be one entity.

Due to brilliant planning, preparation and input by the attendees, I thought that the event was a complete success. We were extremely happy with the progress made and with all of the comments we received about how we should make sure that our plans are exciting and right for teachers and pupils.

The next day was not only monumental to me, but to the whole of LOCOG; the launch event for our official sports sponsor, adidas. Attending the launch and watching history take place before my very own eyes re-programmed into my brain the scale of the project that I am a part of.

This truly is a once in a lifetime opportunity for anyone, regardless of age, sex, race and disability. We at LOCOG are all contributing to something very special, and will change a lot of people’s lives for the better. For generations to come, people will reap the rewards of the legacy of London 2012. There’s plenty of work still left to do for us to achieve this common goal, so let’s get down to business.
