Recently a group of us from different LOCOG departments embarked on the IOC’s Test Event (‘TE’) Observer Programme to Beijing. There was representation from Sport, Transport, Security, Technology, Communications, and Venues and Infrastructure.
As part of the Venues & Infrastructure team I was there to observe and gather information relating to venues and how they were operated in a Test Event situation. Observing the IOC delegation as they observed BOCOG, and understanding what they will expect when it is our turn to put on our rehearsals was an insightful opportunity.
The trip also bred the chance for us to develop a camaraderie amongst us which will increasingly become a vital piece as we move toward Games-time when teamwork becomes most important.
The TE programme covered a crammed five days of venue visits, Venue Management meetings and negotiating Beijing’s traffic.
The venues we visited and others that we saw from the outside are certainly on an impressive scale. The majority of venues were imposing permanent buildings on sites with ample space. Structures which were supposedly temporary looked more semi-permanent or re-locatable.
The Olympic Stadium (or 'Bird's Nest'):

The majority of venue dressing (‘Look of the Games’) even for Test Events was just shy of Olympic standard. On a staffing level the venues were teeming with friendly and welcoming volunteers.
Outside the Beach Volleyball test event:

The 2008 Games will undoubtedly be held in spectacular venues and the locals are such a respectful, friendly and very welcoming people.
