Celebrating Capital Age

Neil, Community team, 20 Aug 2007

For the second Sunday in a row, colleagues from across London 2012 volunteered in droves to staff the London 2012 information stand at the Capital Age festival on London's Southbank.

Anyone who was in London will know that the forecast weather (24C and sunny intervals) didn't occur, but thousands of older Londoners turned out and mingled with the usual flow of tourists along the South Bank between Waterloo and Blackfriars bridges visiting stalls providing information or services to older people.

LOCOG's information stall was at the Capital Age festival for the second successive year as part of our wider commitment to keep all Londoners - including older Londoners who have so much experience to offer - up to date with plans and progress towards the London 2012 Games.

The centrepiece of the festival was the cultural programme, featuring a mixture of acts reminiscent of times past, encouraging participation by older people (and other visitors) or featuring older Londoners as established performers.

Becasue of the volume of visitors to our stall I didn't get the chance to visit the 'Paradise' peformance tent, but passing by it looked veery impressive. Our stall position had changed from last year when we were by the Jazz stage and this year we were entertained by acts like the Sunshine Grannies singer and the Recycled Teenagers dance troupe.

As ever the most interest, and some of the largest crowds, at our nearest stage was generated by the opportunies to get involved, with salsa and streetdance workshops proving tremendously popular the festival-goers and a large aeorbics demonstration raising rounds of applause.

Congratulations go to our colleagues at the London Older People's Strategy Group, many of whom do double duty as part of the Organising COmmittee's Older People's Network, who have devoted months to the preparation of another very successful festival.
