OLYMPIC HEARTBREAK
She was considered a medal chance at the 2008 Beijing Olympics but was disqualified for a false start in the 100m backstroke. The failure was a significant set back for the then-18-year-old who flirted with retirement shortly afterwards. "I am very, very disappointed and even feel my life is less fun because of it," she said at the time. "I cannot get out of such a setback. China Central Television Station shot a short film reviewing my Olympic experience in Beijing. I cried hard every time I saw it played on TV." Zhao however turned her life and career around, going on to win the 50m backstroke at the 2009 Rome World Championships. "It's my first world championship and this was beyond my wildest dreams," she said in tears. (english.wh.gov.cn, 11 Aug 2009)
