Injuries

At the 2011 US Open, she revealed she had been diagnosed with Sjogren's syndrome, an incurable auto-immune disease that causes fatigue and swollen joints. She didn't play again until March the following year due to experimenting with medication, and she has also become a vegan, although she calls herself a 'cheagan' as she doesn't always stick to the diet. (independent.co.uk, 26 Jun 2012)

She injured her left abdominal muscles in 2003 and was forced to miss the second half of the season. In 2011, she again had problems with her abdomen, missing the French Open. (wtatennis.com, 25 Jun 2012)

She struggled with knee tendonitis in 2010 and had to withdraw from Cincinnati, Montreal, Beijing and WTA Championships that year with a separate knee injury. (wtatennis.com, 25 Jun 2012)

A series of wrist injuries on both arms affected her from 2004 onwards. These forced her to withdraw from a number of tournaments, including Dubai, Antwerp and Miami in 2006 and the Australian Open in 2007. (wtatennis.com, 25 Jun 2012)

General
FATHERLY INFLUENCE
Her father, Richard, has been a part of her career from the start, but he has been keen to ensure she and Serena are not just defined as tennis players. "I'm not proud of what they've done in tennis. Tennis is just a game. I'm proud of my daughters for who they are, and for what they've achieved outside tennis. Too many players in tennis, these champions, don't know anything outside tennis. They haven't been to college, tennis is all they know, and what else can they do? They stop playing and then they become coaches or TV announcers, they stay in tennis. They can't do anything else. Most players can't see that there's a life beyond the baseline, that the baseline is the baseline. My daughters have been to college, they have education, and they're not going to be broke." (thetennisspace.com, 27 Jun 2012)

TRAGEDY
Her sister, Tetunde Price, was shot and killed in 2003 not far from her childhood home in the Compton district of Los Angeles. (guardian.co.uk, 11 Jun 2012)

GIVING BACK
The sisters founded the Venus and Serena Williams Tutorial and Tennis Academy in Los Angeles for innercity children. (prettytough.com, 22 May 2012)
