SECOND-CHANCE SELECTION
After being overlooked for selection in the Laser Radial class for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, she had given up hope of making the Australian team. She moved to Sydney to start a physiotherapy degree before she was asked to fill in for a fortnight as skipper of Australia's Yngling crew. With regular skipper Nicky Bethwaite still recovering from two broken arms, the crew needed a stand-in to prepare for the world championships in February 2008. The position soon became permanent after Bethwaite failed a medical test in January, with Weir asked to stay on as the skipper for the Olympic Games. (smh.com.au, 04 Mar 2008)
