LOVE MATCH EXPULSION
In January 2004 a player he was said to be romantically involved with, Fan Ying, was expelled from the Chinese national team and sent back to her provincial team. The then 17-year-old Fan fell foul of an unwritten rule in the Chinese national team that does not allow players under the age of 20 to become involved with other members of the team. An anonymous teammate said it was unfair that Fan's career should be sacrificed because of a 'big-name' boyfriend. Wang escaped punishment because of his importance to China's national team ahead of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. (People's Daily, 08 Jan 2004)
EARLY SUCCESS
He competed at the 2002 Egypt Open in Cairo as a junior in order to gain experience. Instead he won his first ITTF Pro Tour singles title, beating Belgium's Jean-Michel Saive. (ITTF, 19 May 2003)
