IMPROVISED TEST
In December 2007 just moments before she was due to receive her Sportswoman of the Year award from the Dutch National Olympic Committee in Amsterdam, dope testers turned up in Eindhoven to give her an out-of-competition test. She had forgotten to mention the awards ceremony in the 'whereabouts' section of her doping control form and faced the prospect of having to miss the ceremony to race back to Eindhoven for the test. However, an improvised test was conducted under the supervision of the Dutch doping authority and later approved by FINA, leaving her free to celebrate her achievement. (zwemkroniek.com, 13 Jul 2011)

ASTHMA
She is an ambassador for the website astmatest.nl, a website about asthma that attempts to show children that they are not disabled if they are asthmatic. She was diagnosed with asthma as a child but never had the feeling she was less than others. "I wasn't shocked when they diagnosed asthma, I'd expected it I think. When I'd been to my grandmother's house where it was dusty and smoky I couldn't breath well for three days. But at sports, I didn't notice anything strange." (astmatest.nl, 01 Jan 2008).

BREAK
In 2010 she did not swim due to her pregnancy and the birth of her daughter. She made her comeback in 2011, six weeks after giving birth. (tctubantia.nl, 13 Jul 2011; FINA Aquatics World Magazine, 23 Oct 2010).
