General
COMEBACK
He retired from the sport after the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, and told his wife to remind him how sick he felt after the competition just in case he ever thought about doing it again. In his time out of competition he bred and worked with race horses as well as coaching New Zealand's 2004 Olympic Games equestrian team. Then, after some persuasion from his children and the backing of wife Carolyn, he announced in January 2008 that he was making a comeback to international competition in the hope of competing at the 2008 Olympic Games, 20 years after his last individual Olympic gold medal. "I've got to get my eye back in," he said. "I've got to get back into the swing of it. I've been riding every day since [retirement] but that's been race horses." (tvnz.co.nz, 24 Jan 2008, 24 Feb 2008, listener.co.nz ,13 Jun 2008)

PRAISE
During the first stage of his international career, he gained a reputation for being able to get on an unfamiliar horse and turn in a champion performance. It was a reputation that drew high praise from many of his contemporaries, including former Great Britain three-day eventer Captain Mark Phillips who described him as the most gifted three-day event rider the world had ever seen. Phillips' fellow Great Britain riders Karen Dixon and Lucinda Green were also high in praise, Dixon said he could make a donkey jump 10 feet, while Green said he could win Badminton on a skateboard. (olympic.org.nz, 30 Jun 2008)
