He took up rowing at age 13 while studying at Wellington College. (Horleys.com, 30 Aug 2009)

"My older brother Simon was into the sport and they needed a cox. I was small and I was dragged to training and loved the sport." (Odt.co.nz, 30 Oct 2010)

General

Rowing in a lightweight double scull means that his weight needs to remain under 70kg on a race day- 140kg or less for both rowers. "I'm not generating the same output or burning the same calories, so it means cutting back. There's no chocolate pudding at the moment." (nzherald.co.nz, 23 Jan 2011; worldrowing.com, 20 Feb 2012)

UNOFFICIAL RECORD
During the New Zealand National Rowing Championships he beat the world record time but it was not officially recognised as a world record as it was not done at a World Rowing event. (nzherald.co.nz, 23 Jan 2011; worldrowing.com, 20 Feb 2012)
