His father inspired him to take up archery. He was then picked up by archery coaches at a talent hunting camp in 2000, and finished first among 50 boys at the Tata Archery Academy in Jamshedpur which earned him attention from India's junior national archery coaches. His journey in archery was inspired by his elder brother, Nikhilesh Talukdar. He trialed at the Tata Archery Academy but failed to get selected in 1999. Jayanta was picked up by the academy the next year.
